Sizes & Packing Tips

How Much Space Should I Rent?

1. First, consider this:

  • The complete list of what you are storing.
  • Dimensions of the largest items
  • How high will you stack your items?
  • Will you need extra room to move around?

2. Then, call Access: You will find all of the standard sizes at Access…plus many "in-between" sizes that may fit your needs better and save you money, too. Our storage advisors help hundreds of customers determine their space needs every year.

3. Remember: When your storage needs change, you can always add a room or downsize to a smaller room.

Packing Your Room...

When you need access…
Leave a walkway to the rear of the room

Place frequently needed items near the door. Often they are placed on the truck last and are the first to come off. Put them aside so that they go in your storage room last.

Shelving helps you maximize access to your items. You can stack higher on shelves and take advantage of the storage room height.

When you do not need access…
Rent a smaller space and pack it full.

Leave a small air space between every item and the walls and an inch of space between boxes for ventilation.

Put heavy items on the bottom. Light or odd-shaped items go on top. Cover fine furniture with a dust cover or sheet.

Packing Your Things...

Be sure everything you pack and store is clean and dry…to prevent damage from moths and mildew.

New boxes are clean. Boxes of uniform size stack more efficiently.

Take home more boxes than you think you need. Most people underestimate their needs. Unused boxes are returnable at Access for a full refund.

Allow plenty of time for packing. It usually takes much longer than people expect.

Don’t pack fragile and heavy items together. Use small boxes for heavy items, larger boxes for light things. Try to keep all boxes under 30 pounds to save your back.

Fill each box completely to prevent collapse. Seal with strong packing tape. Number your boxes and mark contents on 2 sides of each box.

Use plenty of packing material. Ink free packing paper, bubble wrap, towels, blankets, and pillows work well. Exercise caution when using printed newspaper. The ink rubs off and can cause permanent damage.

You can pack many items in drawers and fill major appliances with lightweight, unbreakable items.
