History

It all began when Ken and Foy Cooley went to NC to celebrate Foy’s grandmother’s 80th birthday. Right outside of Grandma’s town were these long skinny buildings with dozens of garage doors…a self storage facility. The idea of bringing this new service to NJ and NY began to percolate. The Cooley’s partnered with a good friend and after 2 years of much research, hard work and luck, and with the financing help of friends and family and a wonderful local NJ bank, they opened Access Self Storage -- the first self storage facility in the entire NY metropolitan area. That was in 1976.

 

Gradually the Cooleys built more self storage facilities in NJ and NY and developed a particularly customer-friendly style of managing. Other developers sought them out to manage their self storage properties and the number managed grew. Along the way, the Cooleys helped found the New Jersey Self Storage Association and both served, at different times, as President of the national Self Storage Association. Foy Cooley was recently elected to its Hall of Fame.

 

Today Access Self Storage owns or manages 17 self storage facilities in NJ and NY, with over 12,000 storage units for rent. Son Graham Cooley works in the business, alongside some of the finest talent in the industry.

 

Our Priorities

1. CLEAN, SAFE, and CONVENIENT facilities

We clean our storage centers every day. We pioneered the highest standard in self storage security: individual door alarms. Other safeguards include bright lighting inside and outside, 24/7 alarm monitoring, recorded video surveillance and electronically controlled gates. We take safety and security very seriously. We designed our storage centers so that you can reach your storage room with maximum ease. That means lots of ground-level drive-to-your-door units, extra entrances, wide driveways and aisles, and extra elevators in multi-story buildings – wherever possible. Offices are open longer hours than is typical for our industry. 

2. Extra Services & Flexibilty

We want to save you time, money and stress. That’s why we go the extra mile in making extra services available: free use of our truck to move in, free use of our moving equipment, free lock, everything you need in boxes and packing supplies, and shelving specially designed for self storage use. If you can’t be here to accept a delivery, no problem. You can sign up to authorize us to accept it for you. Forget your key? We have a procedure to get you into your storage room. Storage needs change? We’ll help you downsize or add a room without an extra charge. Whatever you need, please tell us and let us see if we can provide it! As a small, local business, we have that flexibility.

3. PEOPLE! Customers and Staff

We’re a family business and we care about our customers like family. You will get our full attention here. As we care about our staff, they care about you and your storage problems. Many of our Storage Advisors and Managers have been with us for years. You will benefit from their years of experience and deep knowledge of the moving and storage process. 4. The Environment And The Local Community

We’re trying to do our part. We installed solar panels that will reduce CO2 emissions by 25,932 tons per year. That’s the equivalent of planting 602,332 trees. Our local communities are extremely important. In every one we support local organizations…sports teams, associations that help the schools, all sorts of other charities. You will find them listed in the What’s Included section of each storage location.
